Broken Open Seed

I see you now that my eyes have opened
and I can look at myself
I venture into the shadow now
where I would sit alone
I can't undo the past and change your memories
although I would do that if I could
But as I open to your pain and listen and know you
in our space of sharing is an exchange

I ask you why such suffering was necessary
you tell me it was not but that it could hardly
have been otherwise given where I started
In each moment is a choice by which we etch our truth
Our boundaries are drawn and our vision is defined
Only when we stumble do we gaze upon our fate

But if you care to listen
I will tell you how to live
with eyes wide open, trust in place
you'll remember who you were
that light of life that blazes still
and dissipates the darkness
but shield your eyes and you'll not see
how far you've moved from me
I know your sadness as my own
I know your yearnings still
you fear that life has passed you by
and you've little left to live
a hard journey came upon you
your neighbour was correct
with not much left to lose now
opening your eyes
weary child, your heart
calls out your name
and in the mists of stillness
our wisdom is the same
