Companionable Stillness

Late at nightwhen the family has gone to bed
and the lights are low
I am peaceful

Each breath is like a caress
warming me, nurturing me
reminding me that I am loved

Who knew that intimacy could be found in such moments
of quiet and stillness, of being alone and yet not?

There is such depth of communication in silence

You might know what I mean if you've looked into the eyes
of one that you love, whether human or animal
and you just know that you're known and understood

It takes you to that same place of communion as sitting in stillness and receiving

Life greets you warmly in your heart in moments such as this
